Legend Daniels 'disappointed' in use of hit in popular video game
Grand Ole Opry member Charlie Daniels is livid over the treatment of one of his hits by the popular video game Guitar Hero. The game, which let's users play their favorite songs by strumming color-coded notes, features Daniels' "The Devil Went Down To Georgia."
In Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, players must battle Lou, the Devil, and outperform him on Daniels' song. If they do, they earn the title of "Rock Legend." The makers of the game
remixed the song from its original version, removing the fiddle for high-octane guitar riffs, and Daniels is not happy.
"The song, 'The Devil Went Down To Georgia,' which I wrote, is supposed to be a lighthearted novelty about a fiddling contest between a country boy and the devil and the devil always loses," said Daniels in a post on his fan message board. "I'm sorely disappointed with the company who owns the copyright for not policing the situation. As it is they have allowed these people to violate the very essence of the song."
Daniels mentions that he does not have publishing rights to the song and could not stop the song from being used, and says he "vehemently disagrees" with the result of its use.
"I did not grant these people my permission to pervert my song and am disgusted with the result," said Daniels.
Guitar Hero is produced by RedOctane and Activision and is available for Sony's Playstation, Microsoft's X-Box, and Nintendo's Wii.
